Venus and Adonis

Oil on canvas, 61 3/4 x 43 3/4 in. (157.0 x 111.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, patch reinforcements, retouch, fine craquelure, staining to the reverse.

N.B. The subject of Venus and Adonis was painted a number of times by Titian, by his studio assistants, and over the years by many others. The copy at hand probably takes as its source a 1554 oil painting, part of a series of mythological paintings commissioned from Titian by Philip II between 1553 and 1562, now in the collection of the Prado. The composition is truncated here on the right side, while in the Prado version three large hounds are fully rendered in the lower right quadrant. Many of the elements are duplicated, however, including the positions of the major figures, the sleeping Cupid in the background with his quiver and bow hanging in the tree, and the overturned vessel in the lower left corner.
Estimate $2,000-3,000

Framed dimensions are 69 1/4 x 50 x 1 1/2 inches.

Inscribed somewhat illegibly in red chalk on the stretcher, "...Ferry...Rue du Maine/ 8 tableaux"
